Are There Contradictions in the Bible?

Does the Bible contradict itself? A fair method for telling apparent differences from genuine contradictions — and how to read difficult passages honestly.

Open any list of "Bible contradictions" online and you will find dozens of examples. The honest question is not whether differences exist — they plainly do — but whether they are genuine contradictions or only apparent ones that resolve on a fair reading. There is a real difference, and a method for telling them apart.

What counts as a contradiction

A genuine contradiction asserts and denies the same thing, in the same sense, at the same time. Two accounts that differ in detail are not contradictory unless they cannot both be true. Honest witnesses to a single event routinely differ — one notices the angel at the tomb, another mentions two — without either lying. Difference is what real testimony looks like.

A method for reading fairly

Before concluding that a passage contradicts another, ask a few patient questions:

  • Context — what comes before and after? Many "contradictions" vanish once a verse is read in its paragraph.
  • Genre — is this poetry, history, proverb, or parable? Poetic language is not failed science.
  • Author's aim — different writers select and arrange details for different purposes, not to deceive.
  • Translation — some apparent clashes are simply rendering choices, not the underlying text.

Apply those questions and the large majority of alleged contradictions resolve. The remainder are usually hard passages we hold humbly, not proven errors — and the central message stands unshaken across them. "The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever" (Psalm 119:160).

Honesty cuts both ways

Reading fairly means neither pretending every difficulty is trivial nor assuming the worst at first glance. We can sit with a hard text, do the work, and trust the One who gave us the book — without forcing answers we do not yet have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the Gospels contradict each other at the resurrection? +
They differ in detail as honest, independent witnesses do, but they agree on the core: the tomb was empty and Jesus was alive. Differing emphasis is not contradiction.
What is the difference between apparent and genuine contradictions? +
A genuine contradiction affirms and denies the same thing in the same sense at the same time. Most apparent ones resolve through context, genre, and authorial aim.

The Gospel

The Bible's differing voices tell one unified story, and that story is good news. Its many writers, across centuries, point to one Savior: "These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name" (John 20:31).

Bring your hardest questions to the text; it can bear the weight. Read the difficult passages slowly and in context, and let the One the whole book reveals meet you there.
